DESIGN IDEA: In a capitalist world, do algorithms sacrifice individual rights? 
OVERVIEW:In project “ Silent Vinyl Record”, I designed a biased court where a vinyl recorder acts as the AI judge, conducting unfair censorship of evidence to expose policy-making bias. When played back, individual evidence is randomly deleted or distorted, while evidence from large corporations is well-preserved, exposing how bias tends to favor capitalist.

AI JUDGE

In our case, we take the copyright conflict as an example to have gaint tech and a individual creator stage a turn-taking discourse through A CROSSFIRE STAND on court. Instead of relying on human lawyers, we use A VINYL RECORDER as an AI judge to expose the justice bias in favor of capitalist interests. When the individual creator speaks, the vinyl recorder malfunctions, randomly distorting their voice, while clearly recording the testimonies of the giant tech, metaphorically illustrating how AI bias in favor of capitalism.

WHAT IS CROSSFIRE STAND?

A prop used for debate, where contestants push the Crossfire Stand toward their opponent to signal the end of their statement or to pose a sharp question.

I use a vinyl recorder to serve as the role of an AI judge

A communication platform for turn-taking discourse between tech giants and individuals.

It connects the speaker to the vinyl recorder, enabling mode changes with a button press.

A SYMBOL OF COPYRIGHT

Vinyl recorders help artists make physical records, symbolizing the process of generating ideas.
SIMILAR TO HUMAN LAWYER

They both act as converters and presenters of information.



SKETCH:
Scenario 1: Negotiating and Recording In this scenario, a giant tech company and an individual creator negotiate in court through a crossfire stand. The vinyl recorder captures their testimonies in different modes.
Scenario 2: Playback and Judging
In this scenario, we play back the record and judge the results using sand, funnels and a balance scale.

Following the principle of 'LESS IS MORE,' are steps 5 and 6 in Scenario 2 redundant?

MY ANSWER:

No, these steps are neccessary.
WHY NECESSARY？ 

I didn’t plan to include th 2 steps at first. However, after inviting 2 groups of users to role-play as infringed creators and giant tech companies, I received the following feedback.
FEEDBACK

“ I felt relieved that my recording went smoothly, but I still don’t know the outcome. Did I win or lose?"


MY ACTION:

I realized that our design needed better visualization, rather than just playing back the recording. So, I visualized the valid sound through the amount of sand accumulating on the balance, making it easier to understand the judgment results and highlight the power imbalance.
